An Exclusive Interview with Our Lead Partner
In the feature, Paul Huguenin, Lead Partner of the HeartSafe NWE project, spoke about the initiative and its potential impact:
“In the Netherlands, we have seen survival rates for cardiac arrest reach 45%—nearly double the rate in Ireland. By implementing a similar system in Galway, we have the opportunity to make a real difference in saving lives.”
The project will build a real-time alert system that notifies trained responders when a cardiac emergency occurs nearby, significantly improving the chances of survival before emergency services arrive.
Community Involvement is Key
A major goal of this initiative is to map all AED locations and encourage local businesses, clubs, and individuals trained in cardiac response to register on HeartBeatNow.ie. This will ensure that help is available as quickly as possible when every second counts.
A European Collaboration with Real Impact
This pilot is part of the Interreg North-West Europe (NWE) program, which fosters transnational collaboration to tackle regional challenges. Galway’s involvement is a crucial step toward developing a model that could be replicated across Europe, proving that community-driven solutions save lives.
